Dbq About Different Colonizations Of America Classical Conversations Essay

866 words - 4 pages

During the 1600’s, America was seen as a vast land of opportunity. Settlers from England began pouring in by the hundreds, all for their own reasons. Two large areas that were settled early on were the New England and Chesapeake regions. They were both settled by the English, but they developed into two distinct societies. However, because the New England colonies were formed for religious reasons, while the Chesapeake colonies were formed for economic ones, they were able to work together for the public interest, and became more stable socially and economically. (THESIS)
The reason the colonies started determined the kind of individuals who were attracted there. The people who came to New England sought religious freedom. In John Porter’s document, it can be seen that people arrived there with their families, bringing children along. It it can also be shown that white servants, not black slaves, came with them. Many Ministers also arrived, along with tailors, husbandmen, and more (Doc B). Because these people were Christians, they were very honest and worked hard, looking to set up an example for Christian settlers to come. (Document Analysis) The people who came to Chesapeake, on the other hand, sought to become rich off of things such as gold or silver. Based on a ship’s list of emigrants bound for Virginia, it can be seen that most of them were male workers, around the age of 20 to 30 years old. It also shows that many of these emigrants were black slaves, and not a single child was brought (Doc C). These men, greedy for wealth, were very selfish, not caring for the fellow townspeople. They would stop at nothing to become rich. (Document Analysis) The two very different reasons for the founding of the colonies attracted two very different kinds of people.
As a result of the settlers who came to the colonies, two very different societies were formed. In New England, the settlers’ main focus was on the community and the Great Commission (Doc A). Because they focused on God, the settlers worked efficiently, honestly, and for the benefit of all. (Document Analysis) In fact, according to John Winthrop’s journal, when settlers first arrived in the Massachusetts Bay colony, they set up half a dozen towns in a matter of days (Extra Document). When any work needed to be done, it was completed quickly. When someone needed help, his fellow townspeople did not hesitate to lend a hand. Everyone truly cared for one another. This, of course, resulted into very peaceful and fruitful society. (Document Analysis) In Chesapeake,...
