When And How You Should Take Communion

1852 words - 8 pages

1] One of the most memorable rituals in the Christian theology is communion. Which is where the congregation drinks wine (grape juice) and eats bread. It is supposed to represent Jesus and all that he did. It was a tradition that was carried throughout history but there was often a debate when and how we should do communion. These are the topics that I will explore and expand on.
The question is why the wine and unleavened bread for communion what is the myth or the purpose of these two things? I mean to me these were very common things that almost anyone can have access to. The real reason why was that they ate unleavened bread or also known as the bread of affliction was because of the Hebrews in Egypt. The story goes that God plagued the Egyptians with several disasters for not letting the Hebrews free. Then pharaoh finally released the Hebrews out of Egypt. That was when the Jews finally escaped from the Egyptians; but before they left they ate unleavened bread which is made without yeast. They made it without yeast simply because they were in a rush. This is a passage from the Bible that explains why Exodus Chapter 13 Verse [3] And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten.[6] Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the LORD. [7] Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters. [8] And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt. [9] And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD's law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt. [10] Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year.)
From that passage it is clear where the unleavened bread tradition has came from, but it still does not specify where the wine tradition comes from. Well while there it no historical reference about wine in the bible. It still symbolizes many things that Christianity stands for. (2) (Wine can be a symbol of fellowship and celebration that has been supported by many verses in the bible including Psalm 104:15 {He [God] causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and vegetation for the labor of man, so that he may bring forth food from the earth, and wine which makes man’s heart glad, so that he may make his face glisten with oil, and food which sustains man’s heart.) So it can represent that God wants us to be happy.} (2)But wine can also represent as a Symbol of the wrath of God. Where the wine actually reassemble God’s fury or judgment. Is.19:14 {The Lord has poured into them a spirit of dizziness; they make Egypt stagger in...
