In the short story “Masque of the Red Death” By: Edgar Allen Poe he delivers the theme of age old inevitability of death and futility of trying to escape death, the setting of his story is based during a time when the bubonic “black” plague took over Europe. The black plague was a bacterium that survived in rats and rodents, human beings became infected when they got bitten by the fleas that lived on these rodents and rats; you knew you had gotten infected by several symptoms such as bleeding in the lungs, high fever and delirium but the most outstanding symptom was bubos. ( again Poe takes the time to explain the significant of this hall and why it was the last hall and why it was colored black, this hall is painted black with blood red stained windows to express death or the end of life this is the reason why this is the last hall in the home from the blue room to the black room it expresses the length of life from the beginning to the end of life).
As the clock struck midnight a stranger appeared among the guest masked as “the red death” walked through every hall passing in very close proximity to all the unexpecting guests, as Prince Prospero laid eyes upon the unwelcomed stranger the prince became very angry in comparison to his invited guests whom became frozen with fear, the prince commanded that his “friends” to caught the hooded stranger but no one moved in fear of this uninvited person who looked like the red death, so they did not prevent the stranger from entering each of the halls one by one , when the prince saw that no one had confronted or captured the masked red death ,the prince overwhelmed with anger ran with the intent to confront and capture the unwelcomed stranger. This masked red death as described in this short story continued to the last and final hall, there Prince Prospero ran in pursuit to capture “red death” running into the black hall with the red stained windows, he confronted death and Prospero dies upon confrontation. When the fear of confronting the masked death passed the remaining guests rushed into the black hall with intention to capture the unwelcomed house guest. Upon entering the black hall the guests realized two things: one that their host and good friend Prince Prospero was dead and two when they finally captured the masked individual, to their surprise there was nobody beneath the costume.
Shortly after their discovery each and every invited wealthy guest fell to their untimely death from becoming infected by the “red death”. Now the reason why the wealthy thousand died was because the “Red Death” infiltrated the whole castle by the unwelcomed guest that appeared earlier in the short story, in the end darkness, decay and the red death have at last triumphed.
