In "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller, the main character, Willy Loman is a man living on the cusp of modern America, in the late 1940's. As more and more new appliances and cars are being manufactured, Willy Loman is constantly trying to obtain the best things for his family. As he slowly starts to lose his mind in this materialistic world, it becomes clear that the only thing he is really concerned about is keeping up with the people around him in terms of success and possessions. Throughout the play, he constantly mentions the fact that he is running out of money and can no longer pay for their new appliances, and he mournfully regrets not going to Africa with Ben, who struck it rich.Willy believes wholeheartedly in what he considers the promise of the American Dream that a "well liked" and "personally attractive" man in business will indubitably and deservedly acquire the material comforts offered by modern American life. Willy has always worked hard for his goal the American dream his name is symbolic to an American low man, someone who is at the bottom of the social scale. "A diamond is hard and rough to the touch" this conveys the message that Willy's decision is hard for his family but worth selling himself for a metaphorical diamond of $20,000. "Pop I'm a dime a dozen and so are you!" a metaphor is used to show Willy and Biff have no significance like a handful of dimes. "But there are all the people he knew maybe they blame him" Willy always bragged about him being well liked and his massive would be massive which is ironic because nobody showed up it became aperient when he died that he failed his dream.Seeds represent for Willy the opportunity to prove the worth of his labour, both as a salesman and a father.
