Death Penalty, also known as capital punishment, was the act of “putting a convicted, or guilty, criminal to death” (Britannica Encyclopedia). Death Penalty was given out for a large numbers of crimes hundred years ago. By the early 21st century 75 countries abolished death penalty for all crimes. In some countries that didn’t abolish death penalty was seldom or never used (Britannica Encyclopedia). There are 140 countries who abolished death penalty either in law or in practice right now (www.amnesty.org). Death Penalty is an act of inhumanity. Death Penalty cause innocent people killed, there are ways to replace death penalty and countries are change position.
Death Penalty may kill innocent people. Death is something that could never reverse. “Errors of justice may lead to the killing of innocent people (Britannica Encyclopedia). Again, dead people could never back to life. Also, if you’re poor people that cannot afford lawyers, you will die because you cannot afford lawyers. Imagine you’re a farmer and you’re working hard to make a living. One day a police tell you that you killed someone but actually you didn’t. Normally you can find a lawyer and of course you will not die because didn’t do it. But you’re a poor people so you may have a chance to die because you don’t have money. Death Penalty is applied unequally, mostly to poor.
There are many better ways to replace death penalty. Life imprisonment is a very good example. Putting someone in the jail forever instead of killing them is a good idea. Life imprisonment can reduce the effect of justice errors. Many countries that abolished death penalty use life imprisonment instead, including Macau and Hong Kong. The benefit of life imprisonment was more than death penalty. In case of justice errors, you can always let them out if he/she is innocent. For those who really killed people, life imprisonment is more painful because they should stay in the jail for the rest of their life. The people with mental illness could also be treated in the jail.
Nowadays, a lot of countries and groups of people recognizes that death penalty is not suitable anymore.
