The term, ‘innovation’ refers to an act of doing something new (Dictionary) while the term, ‘decision making’ can be referred to as a ‘deliberation about the decision situation in order to make a choice’ (O’Sullivan, T. 1988). This paper intends to explore the relatedness between ‘Decision Making in Social Work’ and the research on innovation, “Investigating Innovation Using a Context: Community Based Child Care Services”.

Pragmatics of decision-making, however, explains decision-making based on ‘the context of adapting, coping, generating plans, and acting on human transactions’ (Schulkin, J., 1984, p.xii) in which, human transaction is referred to as the way people are interacting among themselves, receiving feedback, modifying initial responses, and therefore, inquiring and learning from experience (Schulkin, J, 1984, p. Xii). In a social context, Schulkin emphasizes on another issue, ‘legitimation,’ that also influences decision-making process. Legitimation forces one to rethink whether one’s decision enhance one’s social world and enrich interactions between one another (Schulking, J. 1984). Schulkin (1984) argues that the complexity and delicacy in decision-making in a social context are primarily associated with human transactions and legitimation.
The nature and process of decision-making by a social worker depend on the role assigned to or defined by the social worker (Brown, J. D. & Hannis, D., 2008), and the role can be determined through the identification of the position hold by the social worker in the midst of a social change.
