Decisions in Paradise: Part INik, recent college graduate, was offered a challenging career opportunity with his current employer, XYZ Incorporated (XYZ).XYZ is one of America's largest pharmacy benefit managers (PBM), providing the pharmacy benefit for millions of people nationwide through employers, managed-care plans, unions and governmental entities XYZ shares a common cause with each client, helping him or her by offering a healthy prescription-drug benefit today, tomorrow and into the future. Alex started the conversation with explaining why the island was in such disarray. Alex explained it was because of the back to back recent disasters that have taken place. The island has experienced catastrophe earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, tidal waves and volcanic eruptions, which have resulted in many fatalities. Due to the extreme weather Nik will also have to create a contingency and emergency plan using the problem solving techniques process. Kava needs a consistent, successful business culture to help residents get through this tremulous time and thrive into the future.The agenda for Nik's first week in Kava will consist of a brief introduction to the company, review of human resources procedures and organizational processes. Nik will take the information to define XYZ's ideal position and create milestone worksheets. He will need to ensure the facility uses documented processes and procedures to minimize error, maximum work-in-process, control costs, improves efficiency and overall quality while increasing customer and employee satisfaction. Nik's ideal business plan outline will include: details directly related to conditions he has determine to be necessary for XYZ to be profitable and productive; the business position XYZ will fill; present and future opportunities; outline workforce core competencies and expertise required; and the operational and tactical strategies to be used to pull it altogether.Nik was honored XYZ chose him to work on such an important project. L.; Nordtvedt, R. & Perez, L. M., 2002).Nik's first task was gathering information about the island demographics, the economy, workforce, and the current social and economic structure. The Census Bureau states 50% of residents in are under the age of 15 years old. Due to insurance reasons XYZ is not able to employ individuals under the age of 18. A majority of the working class residents will need training especially since XYZ is not similar to another business on the island. Nik will need to form a team of experienced XYZ employees to travel to Kava to train and develop the workforce. Along with the Summary of Procedures (SOPs), employees will learn the job functionalities quickly and cost-effectively. A force field analysis will be used by the training team to identify causes that support or deter the teams training goal. Another challenge will be how well XYZ employees adapt to the environment on the island. Kava is an ethnic melting pot of indigenous South Pacific tribes, oriental, African, French, Spanish, and Americans. Nik will have to expand upon his recruiting capabilities to attract experienced candidates for; Pharmacist and Clinical Nurse positions.
