Decisions in Paradise, Part III

Although A. O. Smith Water Products Corporation (WPC) is a global leader in the water heater manufacturing industry, the decision of expansion into the South Pacific island of Kava presents different challenges and opportunities. In order to build the water heater plant on the island of Kava, A. O. Smith WPC will have to be committed helping both the impoverished people of Kava and the island itself. A. O. Smith WPC will have to work with the people and the government to promote the growth of prosperity and tourism on the island of Kava.
The determining factors that are affecting the decision implementation of A. O. Smith (WPC) building a water heater manufacturing plant on the island of Kava are: money, technology, company image, environment, and the health of the people. The stakeholders were presented with building a decision implementation, and provided feedback addressing these issues as well as Kava community involvement of the decision implementation process. It is important that the Kava community play a role in the decision implementation process.
The IT department of A. O. Smith WPC has begun the wiring process for the needs of network and telecommunications on the island. They have contacted the appropriate government personnel who are assisting them with the proper techniques and regulations that are required. A. O. Smith WPC is able to use the highest of quality materials with very little cost. Involving the locals offers an inexpensive alternative to bringing extra workers from the company. These workers have been trained for the construction jobs and many more locals are in the process of being trained to actually work in and run the factory.
The company image is a concern for stakeholders, along with assisting the local people of Kava Island. Although the company is creating something great for the Kava community, there are concerns that the image of the company and ethical implications of the task at hand may not seem so great. Stakeholders are concerned that building the water heater manufacturing plant in a region that has been so devastated by so many different things, might be a risky endeavor. It was ruled that the Kava Island project presented a rare opportunity to expand the company, help the local Kava people, and in turn prosper from it (making it a risk worth taking).
Roughly, half of the population of Kava is under the age of 15. This poses a slight dilemma for A. O. Smith WPC. This means that the local workforce available will be minimal. The Human Resources Department of the company has already assessed this issue and plans to hire and train as many local citizens as possible. The company will then hire temporary workers from the United States to fill the left over jobs available until the local people are able to take their places.
