Define The Field Of Communication Essay

As we talked about in class for the past few weeks, it is becoming increasingly hard to argue that the field of Communication is a field and providing current research. This lack of a clear and definable position of the field has made it a subject of great focus as many scholars strive to give Communication a definition. This week, the collection of articles provide only a small look into a collection of scholars providing a definition of Communication, each providing their own unique contribution to the definition. This leads me to my argument of are you really even able to define the field of Communication if the field itself provides a variety of definitions.

To define the area of Communication seems to be an easy task to outsiders, but I feel like I am challenged on a seemingly daily basis to define the field. I have always viewed Communication as a tool by which individuals connect and disburse information. This tool can be manipulated to the situation and be used as a means to understand a variety of fields. My reasoning comes from the ways that I have been trained to apply Communication to a variety of fields including Political Science and Business. My training through my classes, internships, and student organizations taught me how to use Communication as a means to convey thoughts to a large amount of people at once. I would argue that my undergraduate career in the field of Communication forced me to apply this tool in a more business setting. I believe that this plays into how I view the field. I view the field of Communication as a field that allows for the exchanging of ideas across disciplines and the incorporation of their methods into the field. My definition of Communication has been challenged by this class. This class has allowed me the unique opportunity to rethink my definition of Communication in a more theoretical sense and to question whether this field ever existed.
