The White House stands proudly on capitol hill, the longstanding symbol of democracy for Americans. Democracy, a government created by the people for the people, gives its citizens a voice in the government of their country.
In countries with democracy all citizens have an equal part in creating laws and help make decisions pertaining to governing. Governments based on democracy include direct and indirect democracy. The Greeks created democracy for the government of their city-states. The form of early democracy allowed members of the elite men to vote for or against laws. This, however, excluded women and all slaves and servants.
This early form of democracy is the first known system of government to allow its citizens to vote on issues and laws. Voting privileges for all citizens of major democracies today, such as the United States and Finland, was obtained by in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Many different kinds of democracy exist today. They include direct, representative, religious, parliamentary, and other forms of democracy.
A monarchy is a government where one person holds all the power. The people have no input in creating laws or choosing a leader. They must obey their leaders even if they don’t agree and because the rule is passed down in a family conditions in a country are unlikely to change. Kim Jong Un of North Korea hold monarchy rule over his country. The Un family has ruled North Korea for many generations, and unless Kim Jong Un dies without an heir, the family’s rule will exist for generations to come.
Only a few countries today have absolute monarchies and the majority of monarchies are constitutional monarchies that have a parliament or legislature. The United Kingdom has a constitutional monarchy, the queen of England has little power and influence on the way her country is governed, United Kingdom’s parliament creates the laws and governs the people.
