Democracy As The Best Form Of Government

1459 words - 6 pages

The foundation of the modern political system was laid in the times when the world was strangled in slavery. In those moments, enlightened minds in Greek came up with the new system that was there to remain for the next thousands of years. This system, now known as democracy, is a form of government in which supreme power is vested to the people themselves. People have the right to elect their leaders directly or indirectly through a scheme of representation usually involving periodically held free elections. A new democratic government is usually established after every 4-5 years, and it is trusted with the responsibility to cater to the needs of all the people irrespective of the fact that they voted for them or not. Although the minorities may not be very pleased with the idea of democracy, however, a democratic government is certainly the best because it establishes social equality among people, reduces the conflicts in the state to a minimum, gives the chance to vote repeatedly, and creates patriotism.
In a democracy, free and fair elections which are held after around half a decade, guarantee social rights and equality. These elections ensure that every citizen has the right to vote, and hence they create social stability among the society. Each and every individual casting his vote in the elections reduces discrimination among the people. Citizens are not judged on the basis of religion, race, color, social status and so on. In this way, the dignity of nationals is not damaged and people can live in peace. In addition to voting rights, a democracy also assures access to other services like security, education, property rights, and healthcare facilities. These human rights maintain social equity and involvement of everyone in a balanced society. Again, there is less bigotry among citizens and people shake hands to work for the good of their own and of the country. According to Aristotle,” Democracy arises out of the notion that those who are equal in any respect are equal in all respects; because men are equally free, they claim to be absolutely equal.”
Democracy creates harmony and reduces the conflicts in the state to a larger extent. A democratic elected government is the consequence of the majority’s opinion and thus it implies that most of the citizens along the state share similar views about the leadership. This analogous belief among the nationals creates trust and clashes among them are unlikely. Furthermore, governments are replaced without any violence unlike dictatorships and Monarch Rules. In a dictatorship, the rule of a dictator never ceases until and unless an opposition is formed in the form of foreign powers or country’s own citizens. Therefore, the clashes among the two forces result in a larger number of casualties and loss of life and property. However, in a democracy, no such civil clashes are likely` and a new government is elected without any violence and terror. For...
