Democracy can be defined as a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. The phrase many people use is “The government of the people, by the people and for the people”. The word Democracy is derived from two Greek words; Demos meaning “people, and Kratos meaning “power”. Democratic governments are found in many countries around the world. The United States is recognized as a one of the biggest countries in the world where a democratic government can be found. The principles of democracy run in line with the ideas of freedom such as the right to free speech.
Democracy is important as it protects the interests and demands of minority groups, and all of these groups have access to the political system. In democracy minorities are free from discrimination and their views are as important as majority views. Democracy is also an important factor of controlling government power and prevents the people who hold power take advantage of it and using it for their own gain rather than for the people’s. This is done in a democracy by having elections and holding those in power accountable for what they have done. Elections do not only help to hold a government accountable but they let the people participate and voice their opinions. The people in a democratic system will be able to influence government decisions by joining political parties and spreading information.
There are many advantages and disadvantages that come with a society run by a democratic government. One of the first issues is in a democratic nation, its citizens hold the right to elect their representatives and governing officials. Many citizens are not aware of all the political issues that are present in the current society. This may result in people making the wrong choices during the election period.
