Demonstrative Communication Essay

Demonstrative communication which includes non-verbal and unwritten communication includes things such as, facial expressions, tone of voice and body language. We use these simple gestures amongst ourselves on a daily basis. Things such as facial expression are used when you want to observe what another person’s facial expressions tell us about him or her, to what emotion they are expressing and how they are feeling. Or if co-workers are happy/surprised to see you, and if colleagues find your presentation to be entertaining or disappointing. I have observed other people’s body language also and how they react when I enter a room. It is interesting to see how people react even when they are not verbally communicating. The author states, that verbal communication “encompasses our verbal filler such as um, and like. Verbal messages are created through language. It involves accurate interpretations of others. (Moore, 2012, P. 27) the author also states, non-verbal communication includes communication without words. A more technical definition is communication than written or spoken language that creates meaning for someone. (Moore, 2012, P.29) Furthermore, demonstrative communication has the ability to influence, shape, and change our culture, society and our lives. When conveying a message to another person for those to fully understand can be either effective or ineffective. For example when communicating with an individual the message sometimes lead to confusion, frustration or even low morale. An ineffective communication experience I had at work, was when I had asked one of the girls I was assisting a question about how I could better improve myself in my work ethic. She told me to use my brain more in those exact words and to have a bit more commons sense. Now because she is from a different country and English was not her first language, I let it slide, but I was very uncomfortable because we work in a corporate company, a professional setting and these are the words being spoken. Here in this case, I would most definitely say this message was communicated ineffectively and negatively. In this scenario I would be the receiver and my colleague would be the sender. Furthermore ineffective communication could have the power to hurt people, confuse them and even mislead the listener.
