Demonstrative Communication Essay

We are communicating with people around us every day, even if we are not physically speaking. Our body language, the tone of voice we use, and facial expressions communicate silently for us during the conversations that we have. These forms of non-verbal communication that most of us are unaware of are known as demonstrative communication. Unless a person indicates the importance of knowing how to communicate properly it is something that can be ignored. The sometimes forgotten forms of demonstrative communication can have both positive and negative reactions and be effective or ineffective for the sender or receiver depending on how they are used. It is important to understand demonstrative communication, especially since we often forget that it can change the way our message is perceived by people.
The way we move our bodies in anger or excitement can be apparent at times displaying our moods without even saying a word. Imagine a little child who is given bad news who walks away with a pouty lip and slumped shoulders. That child has just used demonstrative communication to portray that they were sad or disappointed without saying anything. Now imagine getting bad news at work about losing a project that was just assigned to you. Although we may have hidden our displeasure with the verbal part of the conversation we could have stomped away or used a displeased tone of voice that says otherwise. These are some examples of negative demonstrative communication, and we also don’t realize how this could negatively affect the sender who had no choice in delivering the message. Body language can also help people deliver a positive message with a firm handshake, good posture, and eye contact people can make an excellent first impression. Knowing how to use our body language correctly during an important interview, or meeting could be very helpful to anyone as well as managing the tone of voice and facial expressions we use.
Not only is body language an important form of demonstrative communication, but also we must not forget our tone of voice and facial expressions that can alter our conversations for good or bad. Using a firm tone of voice when having to disincline...
