The cold shoulder harness keeps me glued to my seat as the train comes to a sudden stop. Everything around me is dark as night, but I can see what appears to be a gleaming ray of light at the end of the tunnel. Adrenaline clouds my thoughts as I try to imagine what will happen next. Then, in what seems to be a matter of seconds, I am thrust back into my seat as the coaster quickly accelerates towards the opening of the tunnel.
Minutes before this, I had been standing in line awaiting my turn for this amusement park sensation. As the line grew shorter, my stomach began to churn with anxiety and fear. So many different scenarios began to flood my head with disturbing thoughts as I stepped onto the landing. As I walked through the turnstile to get to my seat, I quickly began to doubt that I possessed the courage to endure this intense roller coaster. The tall, blonde ride engineer came around to secure my shoulder harness. I instantly felt a sense of security as the harness pressed my torso into the seat. Once everyone's harnesses had been fastened, the ride engineer gave the final signal for the ride to begin.
The train lurched forward as our journey began. As we climbed the hill, I could see nothing but the bright red track and deep blue sky. Suddenly the track dropped off like a bottomless pit. I tightly grasped my shoulder harness, knowing that this was the moment I feared most. I felt as if my heart was going to jump out of my chest as the train finally began spiraling downward. Accelerating to extremely high speeds, the Maverick, the roller coaster in which I am riding, then took on a sharp turn to the right, flying over a glistening body of water as a fine mist settled over my body.
Up ahead I could see a small twin to the first behemoth of a hill. As our train approached the base of the hill, I tried to anticipate what was awaiting me on the other side. As our train began its ascent upward, my body filled with panic. Up...
