Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person's thoughts, behavior, feelings and sense of well-being (Sandra, 1997). Everyone will suffer from different kinds of depression in their life, after growing up, for depression is a common phenomenon. According to recent research, almost 85 percent of people surveyed by China Daily admitted they have faced depression in their life. As depression is so prevalent in the word, it is not surprising that social scientists are learning more about its causes. They have found that depression in individuals could result from both genetic and mental factors.
Recently, according to press reports (The New Depression Gene, date), biologists have found an unknown gene that could make people become more easily worried and depressed by weakening the brain’s circuitry. This previously unknown gene has two types, : (semicolon) one that is long and another that is short (tech-ex.com). Biologists have found that people with the short gene get depressed easier when they are under stress than people who have the long gene (tech-ex.com). Anyone could inherit the gene that affects their mood from their parents. If parents and grandparents with the short gene transmit it the gene to their children, the children would get depressed easier when faced with difficulties than children with the long gene.
Genetics are not the only cause of depression. According to sociologists, the reason why some people become depressed is due to their errors in thinking. There are many kinds of errors in thinking that can cause people to become depressed.
The first mental cause of depression may be overgeneralization when faced with specific issues. This means they take isolated cases and use them to make wide generalizations (Boyle, Hull, Jr., Mather, Smith, O., & William Farley, 2009, Pp. 267). For example, you see a single negative event as a never-ending pattern of defeat, “She yelled at me. She is always yelling at me. She must not like me.” In this case, if people always think about things this way, they could always be depressed even if they...
