Dr. Maria Telca Montessori was the founder of the Montessori method of education. Maria, an Italian physician and educator, was born in Ancona, Italy on August 31, 1870 and died May 6, 1952. She was born to Alessandro and Renilde Montessori. Marie’s father was a soldier when he was young, and her mother was well educated. As a child Maria was seen to be self confident, positive, and extremely keen in change and helping people. Maria would knit things for the poor, and she enjoyed taking her neighbor out for walks. Also, it wasn't rare for Maria to intrude in her parents’ arguments, she was most likely getting in the middle and trying to make them stop. In 1906, Casa dei Bambini, which was a schoolhouse, was set up just for her students. The purpose of this school was to help the special needs children to learn just as the “mainstream” children were. So in order for her to do so, she had a “prepared environment, where sensorial education and practical life skills were to form the core of self-driven education and collaborative learning.” (Soissons, Silvana de. “Maria Montessori- the visionary teacher of practical skills for life.” May 17th, 2014.). In order for her to keep this school running she had donations. The next step in Dr. Montessori's career was observing the students closely, which allowed her to come up with her theory. She sat and observed and wrote down how the each individual child would interact with different activities, or how they showed their own independence. The news of how well this method of teaching is going to spread quickly. As a matter of fact, Dr. Montessori expanded her work and opened some Montessori schools between 1915 and 1950. In fact, now there is about 20,000 Montessori schools worldwide.
The Montessori Method is a child-centered educational approach that encourages each child to learn and develop their own unique way. The Montessori has been practiced for over 100 years and has been proven effective. The Montessori method is based off of many observations of children and how they react to different activities. Maria Montessori knew there was another, and more efficient way of teaching students. Instead of making students do the same thing, at the same time, in the same way she took another route. When children learn using the Montessori method, they learn using their environment and other students. The work centers are arranged in common subjects all over the room. The children are free to learn from any work center with no time limit. The “teacher” is more of a supervisor that monitors the children, but teaches when needed. Not only do the students do practical activities, but they have a similar curriculum just taught in a different way.
