Diabetes Mellitus Type Two Essay

Diabetes mellitus type two has become a national widespread phenomenon among millions in the United States. This disease includes high glucose levels in the blood. Produce in the pancreas by beta cells, is a hormone called insulin, moves blood glucose into cells where it will be stored and eventually used for energy. However, patients of diabetes have cells that don’t react properly to the insulin. Consequently, insulin resistance occurs and blood glucose doesn’t get stored into these cells for energy. This type of diabetes progress slowly, and many diagnosed people are overweight. The factor that increases a person’s chance of developing diabetes include poor diet, low activity levels, tobacco use, alcohol use, and excess body weight, which creates more difficulty for the reaction of insulin. There are many methods to treat and prevent diabetes, which includes diet management, regular physical activity, and medication (Wisse). Diabetes has taken the nation by storm and the southern region of the United States has been hit the hardest. In fact, according to the Americas Health Ranking website “West Virginia has the highest rate of diabetes in 2013” and many factors that cause the development of the disease. The obesity percentage in the state has increased from around thirty-two to thirty-eight percent in which 490,000 people were obese (Americas Health Rankings). West Virginia’s high rate of diabetes mellitus type two is due to unhealthy diets, sedentary lifestyles, and tobacco use in which some residents have endured.
Unhealthy diets are a major risk in developing obesity, which can ultimately lead to diabetes. In 2013, the amount of obesity of West Virginia in the past year has increased from around thirty-two percent to thirty three percent, and this includes 490,000 adults (Americas Health Rankings). The cuisine mostly associated with the south is called “southern food” or “soul food” because of the heavy use of fats and lards. Foods like fried chicken, cornbread, and biscuits are just a few examples.
