Differences Between Hemp And Marijuana Essay

882 words - 4 pages

According to the Holy Bible, God said, “Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat” (p100). As the bible said all seed bearing herbs shall be for meat which includes the illegal herb, hemp. Scientifically known as Cannabis Sativa and commonly mistaken for marijuana, hemp can be traced to ancient East Asia. The main difference between hemp and marijuana is that hemp contains less than 1% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It was widely used in the production of medicinal products, rope, and fabric. Hemp was subsequently introduced to West Asia, Egypt and Europe somewhere between 1000 and 2000 BCE. It was first introduced to the western hemisphere in South America in 1545 and has since made its way through the Americas. Hemp production, particularly flourished during the Civil War and World War I, however its market fell dramatically after the Second World War and with the implementation of the Marihuana Tax Act in 1938 hemp was deemed illegal and hemp production came to a grinding halt. Recently marijuana has come to the forefront of many discussions and many debate whether it should be legalized or not. While Marijuana may boost the economy, it however has the potential to over saturate the market while Hemp belonging to the same group of cannabis sativa species has the potential to becoming a multi-million dollar crop, thus building our country's economy. The debate on the legalization of marijuana continues and Caribbean countries wish to get involved to build their economies in a sustainable way. Consideration should be given to a strain of cannabis sativa with a lower THC level and a greater variety of uses known as industrial hemp. Industrial hemp must be differentiated from marijuana so as to either legalize its production and or impose taxes and regulations, focus must be given to the fact that hemp is a nutritionally complete food source and its potential in becoming a multi-million dollar industry while building and sustaining a thriving economy.
Widely confused with marijuana, hemp has been categorized in the same group of narcotic drugs for years. This is mainly due to the fact that they belong to the same species of Cannabis Sativa. Hemp however has a few distinctive features, the main difference is that hemp contains little to no THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) levels. Because of the low levels of THC it is impossible to become intoxicated from smoking or consuming industrial hemp. Hemp also contains a high level of a chemical called cannabidiol or CBD that counteracts the toxicity level in hemp....
