In research, measurement is the series of actions or methods researchers use to observe and record the information collected as part of a study. In order to understand measurement the researcher much understand the basic ideas entailed in measuring, such as the stages of measurement that help the researcher decide how to make sense of data from particular variables in a study as well as the reliability of the measurement. The researcher must also understand different types of measurement such as surveys, qualitative and unobtrusive measures (Research methods knowledge base, 2006). One of the categories of measurement that researchers find difficult to understand is called scaling. Scaling is a category of measurement that “involves the construction of a measure based on associating qualitative judgments about a construct with qualitative metric units (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008)”.
Similar to an index, which applies a measurable score formulated by applying a set of standards to connect variables in order to reflect an acceptable research design, a scale is constructed to render an individual numeric score that embodies the researchers construct. Scaling is difficult to understand because it attempts to measure constructs that are difficult to measure, such as abstract concepts like self-esteem. Scaling is using a rule to assign objects to numbers in a meaningful way (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008).
Scaling is divided into two categories, unidimensional and multidimensional. Unidimensional scales involve the measure of less or more, for example: something is taller or shorter, bigger or smaller and so on (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008).
