This mass extinction was so big that for many years it was used to mark the boundary between the Cretaceous period when the last dinosaurs lived, and the Tertiary period when no dinosaurs were around anymore. The Alvarez hypothesis is that there was a rare element found in Italy by Nobel winning physicist Luis Alvarez. Iridium which is usually found in asteroids and meteorites. Usually you can’t find it on the Earth’s crust, but it is found in the core. Doctor Alvarez thought to believe that an asteroid or meteorite killed the dinosaurs. He believes that this was a worldwide event because there was sites of the iridium in 100 different sites. The effects of the asteroid hitting earth was with how big the asteroid was it would have created a earthquake ten times bigger than the biggest earthquake recorded. With how hot the asteroid was it would have wiped out all near by seas. It would have flattened most of the forests. So there would have been nothing left. There are some doubts about this theory though, because the asteroid was so big and that the impact was so great you would think it would leave a sizeable crater but it didn’t.
