In the movie, war crimes are very visible. Based on the textbook, war crimes are actions executed in the course of war that the international community characterized as crimes opposed to humanity, including atrocities performed against an enemy’s prisoners of war, civilians, or the state’s own minority residents. Atrocities are vicious and savage actions in opposition to targeted citizen groups or prisoners of war, classified as against the law under international regulation.
Jeremy Scahill visited a small town in Afghanistan. A town away from the war zone, but when nighttime falls, terror roams around. He met an Afghan family recovering from the recent deaths of their family members consisted of a man and a pregnant woman. The man killed was a police officer trained by US officials. They were shot by American soldiers. They were not Taliban. They got killed because they just checked the commotion outside their house. After the incident, the American soldiers aggressively took the other family members with them. On a video, American soldiers scooped the bullet out of the dead bodies to prevent the blame, and they were also heard fabricating the story. The concept of ecological fallacy can be applied in this event. Ecological fallacy is the mistake of assuming that the qualities of an entire population are the similar qualities and attitudes of each person within it.
Covert operations are defined in the textbook as top secret pursuits undertaken by a state beyond its boundaries throughout undercover means to accomplish particular political or military ambitions with reverence to another state. When Jeremy Scahill went back here in US, he couldn’t forget about the incident he found out at Afghanistan. He started his painstaking research and discovered JSOC. There is not much information about JSOC, but he found out they are responsible for the killing of the innocent Afghan civilians. After couple of months, JSOC became a household name. They were accountable for hunting Osama bin Laden.
