Disclose or not to disclose? That question usually arise at start of a new relationship, a new job or when meeting a new friend. Disclosing also happen with people we have known for some time. Scholars define self-disclosure as sharing information with others that they would not normally know or discover. My beliefs lie within every everyone of us. Everyone has their own way of defining self disclosure. My definition of self disclosure is letting loose and to trust the person I am disclosing to. Here is where I draw the line and I refer back to the question I posed before. Do I trust this person enough to know my inner most secrets? Is it worth the risk?
In a personal relationship that is becoming persistent, mental health problems or abusive relationships, or when talking to strangers, I self-disclose information. Using self-disclosure with relationships brings forth a sense of certainty between each other, which make the relationship stronger. Couples become closer, share feelings and thoughts together both good and bad. I feel comfortable when talking to strangers being that we do not know each other.
With stronger relationship there is more trust and honest, therefore more disclosure. So my answer will be yes, the relationship dictate the level of self disclosure being that I often disclosed information to people I don’t know because for one they only know what little information I provide.
