“One choice can transform you” (Roth). Every choice made affects the future. Every choice results in consequences. Every choice can change everything. Divergent, a dystopian society novel by Veronica Roth, is about a girl named Tris and her superior Four who conquer the challenges of being involved with a utopian society gone wrong. The society is divided into five factions: Dauntless, Erudite, Abnegation, Candor, and Amity. The factions are made up of the people of the society. The result leads to Tris choosing Dauntless as her faction. If she had made different choices during the test and gotten a single result, she would have gone into the faction she got as her result. The choices she made in the test influenced her result, her chosen faction, people she met, future events, and much more. One choice Tris made in her test transformed her into a brave and selfless young woman who rebelled against the government to save others.

Four, the strong male lead of Divergent, develops a unique relationship with Tris, despite the fact that he his her superior. Four chooses to let Tris into his fear landscape. During Dauntless initiation, the initiates are pushed to face their fears. They do this through simulations of their fears and fear landscapes. A fear landscape is a series of all the fears from the individual’s fear simulations all put into one simulation. Even though they are most commonly used during initiation, Dauntless are still allowed to enter their fear landscapes when they are members. Four lets Tris into his to prepare her for her final test. By going into his fear landscape, Tris learns things about Four that change their relationship. She learns that he only has four fears, hence the name “Four”, his real name is “Tobias”, and he is the son of Marcus, the leading council member of Abnegation, and was beaten by his father as a child. Tris learning all of these things about Tobias leads to their relationship developing into something more than a friendship. Before they were in the fear landscape, they both liked each other, but after she learned those secret parts about his life, something changed. They became closer and after that was when their relationship really started growing. Their relationship impacts both of them. They have each other to rely on for help when they must face tough challenges throughout the novel. They have someone to trust with their life, which makes things a lot easier for both of them. In the novel, it is noticeable that after they develop a relationship, Tobias lightens up a lot and becomes more loving and nice towards Tris, instead of the assertive leader he portrayed beforehand. This is implied after the fear landscape when Tobias says, “You got me through it” (Roth, 331). The quote implies that Tobias trusts Tris and has let her past his protective wall. Tobias’ choice to let Tris know his fears and secrets develops and changes...
