As time marches onward, it seems like the world is becoming smaller and smaller. We can instantly talk to someone halfway across the world and visit almost anywhere on the globe easily. With it being so easy to connect to everyone and everything, we meet all different types of people every single day. This especially applies to the workplace, were everyone needs to make a living. One would think that different types of people would bring something new or useful to a company or society, so they would be easily accepted, however, this seems not be true. There are far too many cases of mistreatment or discrimination in the workplace that go unnoticed, even undealt with. Whether it’s due to ethnicity, gender, age, or religion, there are those who cannot except change in the workplace or in their life, so they make it hard for those that are different than them. While it’s easy to know that this discrimination is wrong and is even openly illegal, it is harder to understand why. What is it that make some people have the mindset that they feel superior than another? I would like to discuss why this is and potentially find some ways that we can fix it.
Diversity is a very beautiful thing, as mentioned before, as it brings many different types of people with various backgrounds. However, with diversity come many people who oppose difference. This leads to discrimination, and one of the biggest factors of it of the concept of race. Race is one of the easiest targets of discrimination because it is the most easiest to identify as different, while paying no respect of their actual ethnicity. To the ignorant, race and ethnicity are essentially the same. Race to them is solely the physical characteristics of a person namely skin color. Their ethnic background would not even be a factor. If you are not white, you are basically just the other. Whether you are African or a Haitian, you are simply black despite the fact that they are totally different ethnicities. Every race that is not white is lumped into their own general categories namely Asian, black, Spanish, and middle eastern. Anyone belonging to any of these groups is given presets or stereotypes that all people in that group are a certain way. The article “Yellow” (389) shows this by giving examples of how the author was faced with this ignorance. He says how if someone says anything or anyone that was Asian, no matter what ethnicity, would say that reminded them of the Asian author. This show how ignorant people have become to other’s ethnicity. I believe race to be purely based on physical characteristics and is completely a social construction. When asked about someone’s race people usually respond with simply black, white or Asian, probably with no consideration of what they are.
