DNA fingerprinting has become one of the best scientific methods to identify genetic information called DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA fingerprinting is an unforgettable part of society, assisting to prove innocence or guilt in criminal cases, resolving immigration arguments and clarifying paternity. This essay will look at whether new born babies should be DNA fingerprint profiled at birth by analysing both the positive and negative aspects of this procedure. Being a fairly new procedure, there are many arguments for and against DNA finger printing new borns. The RFLP’s are put into a gel and using gel electrophoresis the fragments are sorted by their size. The DNA becomes single stranded after the hydrogen bonds break. Free nucleotides from the DNA strand also become single stranded. The DNA fragments get transferred from the gel to a nylon surface and eventually radioactive probes get washed over the nylon surface. The probes join to a DNA that shares the same composition. A photographic film is then placed on the nylon surface and dark bands ultimately show up when the film is developed. The resulting DNA profile is stored on a computer database and researchers are then capable of reading the fingerprint to match others.

There are many obvious benefits of DNA fingerprint profiling babies at birth which can help solve many problems in todays society and therefore the question “ should all babies be fingerprinted at birth” is raised. One of the main benefits would be that it makes it easier to determine paternity. Parental testing through the use of DNA fingerprinting is presently the most precise technology to determine parentage these days. DNA fingerprinting and profiling helps determine the biological parents of a child. Since the child has parts of DNA from both its mother and father their fingerprints can be compared through a database.

Another positive outcome that would arise if babies were DNA fingerprinted at birth is its use to solve crimes in forensic science. A root of hair or even just a small drop of blood found at a crime scene carries enough DNA for testing. Just like paternity testing, DNA samples found can be put through a database and compared to possible suspects providing scientific evidence which may be used in courtrooms to determine whether the suspected criminal is innocent or guilty.
