DNA Typing has become more present in the world with the creation of new technology, allowing justice to be served in courtrooms, helping to identify bodies after major devastating events have occurred, and also in processes that the average human does not pay much attention to such as the production of biofuels. The process of DNA Typing is not easy considering the fact one must first go through the multi-step process of DNA extraction. Along with DNA Typing also comes the job opportunities that are available, the organizations that have been created in respect to this subject, and the average salary that is available to people who hold a job in this field of work. The use of DNA Typing will become more common in the near future as the number of jobs in this field is expected to rise over the years.
DNA Typing is “a technique used especially for identification by extracting and identifying the base-pair pattern in an individual’s DNA.” ("DNA Fingerprinting") The process of DNA Typing began in the mid 1980s and was discovered as a result of biomedical research. ("DNA Typing by RFLP Analysis") In order to understand the process of DNA Typing one must first have a basic knowledge on DNA it self. The letters DNA represent the word deoxyribonucleic acid. ("The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica") Frederich Miescher first observed DNA during the late 1800s, but it did not become a big deal until 1953 when James Watson and Francis Crick discovered the double-helix structure. ("Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) Fact Sheet") A persons DNA is created from the DNA of their mother and their father, and makes up who they are as a person. All parts of the body contain the same DNA excluding red blood cells. ("STR DNA Analysis") DNA is made up of adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine, which are its chemical bases. When these DNA bases come together, they turn into pairs. A unique feature of DNA is that it is able to make copies of itself. ("What is DNA?") DNA is present in all living things, which includes plants, fungi, insects, and humans. DNA is unique because it is different in everyone with the exception of identical twins. ("Genes Are Us") Although most people have their own unique DNA, 99% of ones DNA sequence is the same as all other humans DNA. ("What is DNA?") DNA proves to be a very complex structure as it is constantly and continually studied in order to have a better understanding of the biological background of all living things.
DNA Typing has been a useful method in criminal investigations, in the identification of a large number of people, in the conformation of the identity of human cancer cell lines, in the determination of whether a biological substance is of human origin, and in the study of the genetic ancestry of the human population.
