Waking up in a pile of drool after taking a snooze in class can be so embarrassing. Falling asleep at school is one of many effects from lack of sleep. Eighty-five percent of people don’t get the amount of sleep that is needed to fully function (National Sleep Foundation). Not knowing the correct amount of sleep that is needed can result in sleep deprivation. After acquiring knowledge regarding the varying amounts of sleep for different ages, the negative effects resulting from a lack of sleep and exploring ways to improve a person’s sleep it will become easier to live a healthy and more fulfilling life.
The amount of sleep needed fluctuates for different ages and during different phases of life. Sleep needs are individual, so they will vary slightly for different people (National Sleep Foundation). “Teens need about 9 ¼ hours of sleep each night to function best (for some, 8 ½ hours are enough). Most teenagers do not get enough sleep — one study found that only 15% reported sleeping 8 ½ hours on school nights” (National Sleep Foundation). This low percentage is caused by irregular sleep patterns across the week that affects a teen’s biological clock. It is also caused by the hormone melatonin that tells the body when it should go to sleep and when it should wake up. During puberty, teens go through a two-hour shift in melatonin levels, and this causes teens to have a harder time going to sleep early. Adults on the other hand, don’t need the same amount of sleep because hormones and sleep patterns have changed (Lepsik). Adults need 7 1/2 to nine hours of sleep to be fully alert and aware (Smith, Robinson, and Segal). Many adults have occupations as well as several obligations that delay their sleep schedule, causing them to be awake longer than desired. This creates a shift in sleep patterns resulting in fewer hours of sleep as well as a tendency to have sleep that is more restless. If people do not receive the correct amount of sleep there will be mental and physical consequences.
Not getting enough sleep can affect physical appearance, health, and awareness. Two of the most common side effects of little sleep are obesity and acne. A lack of sleep will make the skin more prone to pimples and will also lead to eating too much food, or eating unhealthy foods (Teens and Sleep). Fine lines, dark circles under the eyes, and lackluster skin are also caused by sleep deprivation (Peri). Beauty sleep isn’t just a saying; sleep can actually improve ones complexion and weight. In addition to the physical effects, there are also repercussions that impact a person’s mental as well as emotional state. The National Sleep Foundation warns that, “not getting enough sleep or having sleep difficulties can limit the ability to learn, listen, concentrate, and solve problems.” The consequences of a lack of sleep result in adults and teenagers falling asleep and being less aware at both work and school.
