Do Single Gender Classrooms Boost Academic Success?

In recent years there has been a great debate on whether single-gender classroom enables students to focus better and boost academic success. Numerous studies and research have been conducted to investigate the advantages of single-gender schools and classrooms over co-educational schools and classroom settings.
To further investigate the advantages of single-gender schools and classrooms over co-educational schools and classroom settings, an interview was carried out from an eighth grade math teacher from Tomah Middle School who implemented the single gender program as her Master’s Degree program project when the No Child Left Behind Act eased restrictions on these types of programs. This would allow the boys in particular, to focus on improving their grades, which could lead to a reduction in their negative behaviors. Additional advantages include improved test scores, decreased disciplinary problems, more fully engaged learners, and a more energized school community. Grandville states that “separating boys and girls can make for more comfortable classrooms, where both sexes are more willing to take risks, speak up, contribute answers, express uncertainties, and ask questions” Grandville (2012) equally supports the single-sex class innovation given the acknowledged social, hormonal, and brain differences that exist between boys and girls. She further suggests that this innovation can help to minimize the social, emotional, and romantic distractions that naturally begin during early adolescence.
On the other hand, studies from the American Council on Education reports that there is a less academic disparity between male and female students overall and a far greater achievement gap between students in different racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups, with poor and minority students’ children faring poorly. Bridging that academic chasm, they argue, deserves more attention than does the gender divide. Another disadvantage of single-gender class is that students will one day live and work side-by-side with members of the opposite sex as well as educating students in single-sex schools limit their opportunity to work cooperatively and co-exist successfully with members of the opposite sex (Stanberry, 2014).
The idea of introducing single-sex classes in a co-educational school is a direct attempt to bridge these two opposing views.
