Do We Really Have Free Will? A Study Of Predestination.

2066 words - 8 pages

How free are we? Do we really have a choice in what we do, or is our path already chosen for us? Some would say that God is limited in his knowledge, while others say that if he is all knowing, and that does not allow for human's free will because God's knowledge of the future actually removes the choice. The fact is however, God is omniscient, he knows the past, present and future, God has a plan for the world, and the world is free to do as they choose, despite God's omniscience. People are in fact free to make their own choices. God's foreknowledge does not remove the gift of freedom given to man from God, but simply allows him provide greater care for his people.God is omniscient. Some would argue that either God doesn't know all, or that he restricts himself from knowing all. It is evident however, throughout scripture, that this is not true, "...the LORD is a God who knows..." (1 Sam. 2:3). God is very much aware of what is happening in the present, past and future. Psalms 139 compares God's thoughts to the number of grains of sand that exist. "How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand." (Psalms 139:17, 18)God knows what is happening at every minute. "...for [God] views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens." (Job 28:24). God knows the number of stars that scatter the sky or the grains of sand in the seas, or the number of hairs on each person's head or when one sparrow falls to the ground (Matt. 10:29, 30). God not only knows what goes on, but understands it and he sees not only our actions, but also our thoughts (Craig 1987, 22ff).God also knows what has happened in the past. If God knows the present, what has passed, was at one time present thus giving God that knowledge if by no other means than that. Therefore, the only way his memory of the past would be incomplete would be for him to forget something and this is not characteristic of the God of the Bible (Craig 1987, 22ff).Finally, God can see what will happen in the future. "God directs the world toward his foreseen ends." (Craig 1987, 22ff) God proclaims himself to be the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. (Revelation 22:13) God knows all until the end, he is the end himself. God's foreknowledge can be seen over and over again in the countless prophetic writings of the Old Testament. One explicit example among many is found in Genesis 15 when God reveals to Abraham the event of the coming 400 year exile. Another time, He is able to see Nebuchadnezzar's thoughts along with many others and as written by the Psalmist in Psalm 139:1-6. The New Testament states that "God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew..." (Romans 11:2). God Knew what would happen, and he knows what will happen, for he is the same yesterday, today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)In all three of these categories, God is all knowing. God knows what has happened, what is happening, and...
