Raising a child properly is important to parents. In China, the biggest issue for Chinese parents is how to raise their children properly. Chinese parents believe an old saying: talented apprentices trained by strict master(s). This old saying inspires Chinese parents that a child has to be treated strictly to make sure that the child becomes a talented person. Therefore, Chinese parents treat their children strictly even though Chinese parenting methods are different.

When they are watching Shirley’s old movie, the mother thinks the daughter can be Chinese Shirley Temple. She expects her daughter to be an amazing child. when she sees a nine-year old girl play piano on the Ed Sullivan Show, she thinks her daughter can do that too, even better than the girl. Even though these expectations are different, all of them are very difficult to be achieved by children. However, some children can achieve their parents’ expectations, and some disappoint their parents. Amy Chua will do anything to make her daughters to reach her expectation. When Amy’s daughter fails to play the difficult piano piece, Amy forces her daughter to keep playing piano; moreover, “[Amy] wouldn’t let [her daughter] get up, not for water, not even to go to the bathroom” (Chua 265). At the end, her daughter finally can play the piece. On the contrary, Mrs. Woo choose to give up when her daughter fails and resists. After Jing-Mei’s terrible piano performance in a talent show, Jing-mei refuses to play piano again. At the end, Mrs. Woo compromise with her daughter. Both mothers have high expectations for their own children at the beginning, but because their different choices, there are different results.
Both articles have shown different families has different rules, but all rules must be obeyed. Every Chinese family has their own rules for their children.
