Do you ever get the feeling that you are being watched? With advancements in technology this is becoming less paranoia and more reality. Today, nearly everyone has a smartphone, tablet or similar gadget but, how much of what goes on inside these little machines do we really understand? Most companies, especially large technology companies, will stop at nothing until their pockets are lined a mile deep. Because of this undeniable fact, I would not put it past the vast majority of these companies to do anything to turn over greater and ridiculously larger profits.

Most people carry their mobile phones as a matter of convenience and could not imagine life without them. This phenomenon has allowed a new set of privacy invasion tools to come into the realm undetected. One of these tools comes in the form of Presence Orb. Presence Orb is a new device created by Presence Aware that monitors footfall around its local area. This is done via tracking Wi-Fi-enabled devices’ MAC (Media Access Control) addresses. These addresses are unique to each device and allow the company, in essence, to track the device, and therefore you, around as you go about your day. This monitoring is done passively and so there is no indication that it is taking place in the area around it. Some shops have installed these devices to allow digital advertisement boards to display promotions for products when a device comes nearby their shop or near a competitor’s store. Should we allow for this kind of invasive monitoring and aggressive advertising? This could create complacency, with shop owners allowing prices to rise dramatically as there would be a lessened sense of retail competition. Should we tolerate companies obtaining this kind of information in the first place? Most people would say that they were against having their movements tracked in the real world, no matter what the supposed benefits to the consumer are. This sort of technology could also be integrated with other privacy invasion tools. Another privacy invasion device is the new Google Glass. This could not only let companies know where you are but also see what you are doing without you even realising.

Google Glass is one of Google’s X (semi-secret) lab projects. It consists of: a transparent computer display, which creates a real-world heads-up display; internet connectivity and built-in video and audio recording equipment. This futuristic wearable gadget is meant to be able to show directions and information about your surroundings on top of the world that you are seeing. It is also designed to help spot friends and family in crowds or busy places. It can also give helpful reminders of business contacts. This all appears to be a fantastic new toy, but this means that Google can gain lots more information supplied by the uninformed, willing public.
