Does News Media Play A Negative Role In Pakistan?

2567 words - 10 pages

Firstly, the most appreciated point of media is that it plays vital role in analyzing the government and the political personalities used to misguide and mislead the public by giving controversial statements about their opponents and by portraying one side of the incidence, policy and some political issue. Our politicians are also involved in corruption for example in previous years in the OGRA corruption case Yousuf Raza Gilani and Raja Pervez Ashraf, two former prime ministers belonging to the PPP, were involved in corruption of 82 billion and in the illegal appointment of former Oil & and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) chief Tauqeer Sadiq. “The sources said that after appointment of the new NAB chairman, the bureau had decided to summon. Mr. Gilani had challenged the bureau to arrest him and said. “I have not only appointed Tauqeer Sadiq but also a number of high-ranking officials during my tenure as prime minister, including the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Chief of the Army Staff, air and naval chiefs and the Joint Chief of Staff Committee. He contended that it would be unfair to say that the appointment of Tauqeer Sadiq was illegal and that of others made by him was legal and justified.”() Media also exposes the financial irregularities and consequently this corruption case was exposed by the media. So, media act as a hurdle in way of corruption. Similarly, when a statement is given by a politician media people discuss it and analyze in talk shows, furthermore, media also take opinion of the public through different programs and finally show that statement was rational or not. On the other hand, it is not sure that whether media is pure or corrupt because media persons and anchors are also involved in blackmailing cases and in manipulating the truth of incidence and reality of corrupt people. Recently “A record of payments allegedly made to 19 senior-journalists of Pakistan, by the Bahria Town owner Malik Riaz has surfaced on the social networking site Twitter, Aaj News reported. The list includes “nationalists”, “liberals”, and “fundos”. GEO takes the prize with the largest number of names followed by Dunya News. Renowned names of various news television anchors and journalists like Dr. Shahid Masood, Najam Sethi, Kamran Khan, Nusrat Javed, Meher Bokhari, Mubasher Lucman, Hamid Mir, Javed Chaudhry, Sana Bucha, Sohail Waraich and Asma Shirazi.” So after this it is clear that media itself is corrupt and is involved in misleading people. Therefore, it is also possible that the media help the corrupt politicians and hide the truth from the public. This makes it difficult for the people to decide that whether it is news based on truth or is biased. It is felt that biased and distorted reports on public affairs would be less numerous if standards of professional work were raised and were applied on industry wide basis.(Burnard Rubin Media, politics democracy).
