While many people say racism does not exist, racism still exists today. However it is in a different tone.
Racism is something we all can attest to. An abundance of people ignore the fact that race is not a life concern, but an artificial categorization of people with no reliable facts.
Therefore, the discrimination we make among races has nothing to do with ancestral aspects. Race was created by people who felt that they were not quite used to the ideas and faces of different races . “The definition of race all depends on where and when the word is being used. In U.S. history, the meaning of the label “white” has changed over time, eventually adding groups like the Italians, Irish and ...view middle of the document...
Even if you allow yourself to get to know someone of another race, this will most likely be planted in the back of your mind.
Another indication as to how racism affects society is through the media. As children grow up, media becomes a factor of their lives whether or not we want it to be, and it is also a vital source in how racism keeps itself alive. From the time of the 1970’s until now the media has been giving us racial labels, one oof the most largest supplies emanating from crime shows like “Law and Order”, and “CSI”. When dealing with crime, people of color are reflected in the demarcation of “them” and “us”. Whites are often represented as the “good guys”, or the vigorous, law abiding citizens. They often target people of color, sometimes without scarcely any evidence. Directors and writers use racial stereotypes to make a more intricate story with more suspects.
The lives of people today are different from those of the past. In the past there was no middle class. You were either rich or poor. Some Republicans say middle and working class black and Latinos are lazy and should not receive government assistance. Blacks and Latinos have the right to government assistance just as much as whites.
In today’s America people are always looking for excuses to make themselves look or feel important. “A black news reporter walked into a Republican convention and had peanuts thrown at her. They told her this is how we feed animals.” A republican on live television said that minorities should help clean the lunchrooms or help the janitors if they receive free lunch. He later gave a definition of minorities, which he stated any race other than white.
It is apparent that traceable members of racial and cultural oppressed groups continue to struggle for equal access and opportunity, specifically during times of tough economies. Usually, during this period, the targeted race has a more difficult time doing things such as finding a well-paying job or house. While there have been some considerable gains in the labor status of racial minorities, substantial gaps remains. Racism is prevalent in all areas of employment. For many members of exploited racial and ethnic unit, there is always an economic despondence. “Studies show that people of color are the last hired and the first...
