To Nigerians, punctuality is not that important and time is not seen as valuable, therefore, late appointments are common and usually expected. Respect is also another crucial part of the Nigerian culture, age is highly respected and often seen as a form of wisdom; thus, the older you are, the wiser you are. There is a Nigerian proverb which says - "if a child has more clothes than an elder, he/she can never have more rags than the elder" - meaning that the youth can have more material things than an elder but can never have the kind of life experience an elder has. This proverb seeks to emphasize the importance of respecting and listening to elders in the Nigerian culture, elders, anyone older than you or in a higher position than you are must and should be respected.Furthermore, while non-equality and boasting about individual achievements is almost like a taboo amongst Danes, it is very much normal and common in the Nigerian culture. This is because Nigerians are generally proud and self-confident. Also talking about personal life or showing interest and asking about the personal lives, health and welfare of each other and their respective families is a very common habit in a typical workplace in Nigeria. Knowing all team members' names will be highly appreciated and business partners often refer to or call each other using the respective titles such as - Mr, Mrs, Miss, Chief, Doctor, etc. - alongside the surnames. Invitation to the home of a business associate for dinner and to meet the members of the family is a usual occurrence; if this happens, be sure to accept the invitation! Rejecting such an offer might come across as being disrespectful or unfriendly. The concept of friendship and forming a solid friendship with your fellow counterparts in order to acquire and maintain business is very important in Nigeria.It is advisable to be able and willing to give little unofficial payment for various services in order to fasten some processes, this kind of payments are often referred to as dash and although it is greatly discouraged by the government, the practice stills remain widespread.
