Domestic Violence is one of the largest social problems affecting the human race today. Domestic Violence affects every member of the family including the children. The effect on the children exposed to such situations in their home is a growing issue. The children are invisible victims to domestic violence. Children who are raised in families where domestic violence is present live in constant fear each day. Children are affected in many ways. Although the issues may seem indirectly, the children are directly affected. The child may be scared to speak with someone about the issues in their home because a parent may have told them not to involve anyone in their family’s issues. When abuse takes place the children are often scared to establish a bond with either parent and they feel that they are being neglected. When children feel neglected they begin to act out in school and in the home to receive attention. It is important to understand that children are silent victims and that their voice needs to be heard as well.
I have watched many women in my family suffer from domestic violence. I hate to see women in an abusive relationship remain. Many of us have tried to help family members escape an abusive relationship but they tend to always go back. I am not sure what makes them go back. About two months ago my wife’s cousin and her husband were arrested on domestic abuse battery charges. The husband pulled a knife on his wife and started stumping her in front of their six children. The children were smart enough to call the police. However, when the police got there, the wife did not tell the police the honest truth. She caused herself to be put in jail trying to protect him. The children had to witness their mom and dad go to jail. They are all currently living in a shelter; however, the mom is thinking about moving back with said husaband instead of doing what is best for the children. The children said they do not want to return home to their father but they would like to visit. My goal from researching domestic violence will be to find out why women remain in abusive relationships. I also would like to know how some women escape it.
Problem or Objective
What I would like to research is how domestic violence in the home affects the children and the battered parent mentally and physically. Too many times domestic violence goes unreported or is not reported accurately. I would like to do a study and see if I can get some accurate reports to help find programs for battered victims. It is truly important that research be completed accurately, intervention takes place, and prevention programs be put into place. Research methods and policies need to be updated because help is truly needed
In studying domestic violence, the issue of how children are affected physically and mentally need to be brought to the light and looked into so that action can be taken and better programs put into...
