Domestic violence is defined as the abuse of a spouse or significant other. Most people who are victims of this physically detrimental abuse are women: they make up 85% of domestic violence victims, and one in every four women will experience it (Domestic Violence Facts). In a society that fights so adamantly for equality and human rights, there is absolutely no reason for domestic violence to still be occurring. Some people may think that domestic violence is not as it seems, but these people are mistaken. Domestic violence is wrong because it is harmful, sometimes even lethal, to the spouse, damaging to the children, and is a form of female degradation.
The first reason that domestic violence is unethical is because it is, obviously, harmful and sometimes lethal to the spouse. Fran, a victim of domestic abuse, stated that her husband would back-hand and strangle her when they would get into arguments if he did not like what she said. Eventually, the violence escalated until her husband tried to kill her. Fortunately, she was able to lock herself in the bathroom and call the police (Fran's Domestic Abuse Story). There are thousands of other cases like this; however, others turned out to be lethal. In fact, one-third of female homicide victims are killed by their intimate other (Domestic Violence Facts).
Although domestic violence is known for physical harm, it is also psychologically harming. When a person is being beaten and emotionally made to feel inferior, that person may begin to believe everything their spouse is telling them. For example, Fran (the victim stated above) says, “It wasn't just the physical abuse it was the emotional abuse also. Over the 18 months we had been together he had slowly managed to isolate me from my friends and family” (Fran's Domestic Abuse Story). This makes it very difficult for the victim to get out of the predicament they are in. If, by some chance, the victim gets out of that situation alive, they still have some mental recovery to go through. Most victims end up having to go through therapy to stop the memories from coming back.
As many people experience domestic violence that scars them tremendously, there are many organizations around to help. One organization that helps these women, men, and children who experience violence is Futures Without Violence. This organization is designed to strengthen communities by having them participate in protecting women who experience domestic violence. An example of what this program has worked on is the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA). This act proposed that legislation focus on violence against women, and stood to draw more attention to the subject. (Our Work).
The second reason why domestic violence is absurd is because it mentally damages the children that witness it. Veronica Roth, the author of Allegiant, said, “How many young men fear that there is a monster inside them? People are supposed to fear others, not themselves. People are supposed...
