Don’t Be So Antisocial Essay

776 words - 4 pages

Even though technology has led to positive life changing events, it can cause negative consequences such as loss of communication with friends and others. In addition, technology can contribute to a lack of focus in the school setting. Distractions like texting can substantially affect grades in the long run. Even though technology allows people to do more than one thing at a time, it greatly diminishes human interaction, thus contributing to educational problems by causing people to lose focus on the task at hand.
Many people are becoming “robots” because they are poor communicators with each other. If people communicate at all, it’s by text or Facebook messaging. Pretty soon, it will be completely normal not to have face-to-face conversations because people have been living in this kind of world for so long. For example, in Fahrenheit 451, Montag asks Mildred how they met (keep in mind, they are married) and neither Mildred nor Montag could figure out how or why they met. Montag asks (Mildred), “When did we meet? And where?...I don’t know,” she said “It’s been so long.” This is very sad considering they have been married for ten years! This is a warning sign that people are losing communication with one another. It is also an issue when a parent loses communication with their children. Say the children get a new game and cannot stop playing it because they must “beat the level first”. They become addicted to the game and physically cannot stop playing till they win. People who are addicted to electronics can become so into a game they are not able to think of anything else but this game. This causes them to forget priorities, such as using the restroom, eating, or drinking even. Douglas Rushkoff said, “As it turns out, a few people have actually died in PC bangs after gaming marathons where they played 50 hours or more with little food or water.” (Digital Nation PBS) If these extreme gamers continue to cancel out the world, a fun little past-time may lead to death (Digital Nation PBS). Many people are missing out on life because of a game or because they are always on their cell phone. A study from Western Washington University showed that 75% of college students talking on their cell phones didn’t...
