Title: 80 Word Count: Grade: Drosphilia melanogaster Lab Objective: The objective of the drosphilia melongaster lab is for us to grasp genetics and the mating of the ebony and wild fruit flies. What we are trying to do is to predict the phenotype and genotype of the flies and compare and contrast them to the concrete results. To do this you must first create a suitable environment for the flies to reproduce in.I. Materials and Procedures: a. A plastic tube 1x3 inches.b. Plastic Screen c. Yeast as a food source d. Sponge lid e. Agar f. Water g. Ebony/Wild Flies h. Ether Procedures: Prepare tubes by carefully cleaning them. When clean you must first add agar to the inside of the tube by mixing a tablespoon of it with water, until your result is a thick paste. You must be careful not to contaminate the tube because most likely if you fidget around with it the environment in which the flies will live might result in an un-thriving environment. The females once they make a larva must be separated into a tube with ebony males once more; you will then have an F2 generation.II. Results: Wild Fruit fly Parents (F).Their genotype is as follows.Parent F F f Ff Ff f Ff Ff Wild Flies X Ebony Flies=F2 Generation.Ebony x Parent F F F FF Ff F Ff ff With a total of 17 flies in the F2 generation, thirteen of these were wild while the others expressed the Ebony traits. The 3:1 ratio was nearly identical to that of the expected outcome not including the un-hatched larva.III. Discussion: a. When parents differ in some way their children usually show a single parents characteristic. The larva produced by an individual should end up producing half of one parent's traits and half of the others also. When an organism carries one trait this does not mean the same genetic material is carried by it. Wild flies in the F2 generation were dominant with the exception of very few recessive flies. With a 3:1 ratio for the F2 generation this will be the phenotype, while the genotype is 1:2:1. To arrive at these ratios and to accurately predict them a punnent square is used. Each fly is controlled by the parent's traits. If you do not have a principle of segregation it would be very plausible to think massive mutations would take place. Each gamete receives both the same number and kind of chromosomes. It is interesting that out of four pairs of chromosomes in fruit flies, only a single pair is responsible for gender. The predominant traits in the male fly's linked through sex were that they're abdomens were black at the tip. The females all tended to be larger with more of a striped black abdomen.b. The results were expected due to the starting ratio. If the majority of the larva had hatched then we could probably expect the ratios to be more precise. After probing others for their results I found that most outcomes paralleled my very results VI. Conclusions: a. Mendel was correct by using classical genetics that assumed the properties of the characteristics of this population he reproduced.b. Phenotype and Genotype of the male and female couple will cause half the offspring to receive half the mother's genes and will also inherit half the father's genes as well. When chromosomes undergo the principles of isolation this is the result of the offspring ending up male or female.
