In Michael Moore’s “Idiot Nation,” the harsh reality behind American education remains quite evident in “the knowledge (students) acquire in school is not going to serve them throughout their lifetimes. Many of them will have four to five careers in a lifetime. It will be their ability to navigate information that will matter” (Moore 141). According to Moore, American education today by no means prepares students for the real world of work. In fact, he infers that students must acquire the acute skill of navigating through information that will guide them into their future careers. The American school system not only teaches students unnecessary material, but also does not stimulate principle qualities that students need in order to develop into bright, innovative, and independent individuals. Structured public education does not breed entrepreneurial spirit; but rather, it destroys it. For what seems like endless years, teachers brainwash students to abide by certain rules, complete homework, and accept discipline rather than learn. They simply learn to submerge their unique personalities under the sort of “totalitarian dictatorship,” which the American school has come to represent implicitly (Moore 147). Because present-day American schools do not promote intelligence, creativity, and individuality, they fail to prepare their students for the modernized, competitive world of labor, in which an idea parallel to Herbert Spencer’s “survival of the fittest” holds strong.
In addition, there exists a noticeable decline in libraries in America. Michael Moore explains that “kids deprived of access to good libraries are also being kept from developing the information skills they need to keep up in workplaces that are increasingly dependent on rapidly changing information” (Moore 141). Without the necessary educational resources, students fail to develop the essential critical skills that they will need to have fruitful futures. According to Moore, the deterioration of American education goes back to the politicians, leading investors, and lawmakers who do not prioritize education in their agendas. So how would the American education system flourish if those at the head of it do not acknowledge its importance? Moore sardonically presents data that demonstrates the waning priority of education and the greed of politicians in modern-day America, saying “Oh, it’s on the funding list—somewhere down between OSHA and meat inspectors…A Congressman who cares only about which tobacco lobbyist is taking him to dinner tonight receives $145,100” (Moore 140). That poor listing of education gives reason as to why such decay in American education exists.
How can one tell that a decline in American education exists? The answer simply revolves around America’s ranking on national and international levels through standardized testing.
