Educational Preparedness For New Nursing Graduates

To produce high quality nurses that are ready to compete in the professional world there needs to be a focus on preparing them for the emotional and mental challenges they will face as they enter into the healthcare environment. In addition to being not just mentally prepared, every modern job requires team focused employees. This is even more important in a healthcare setting where there are literally lives depending on the ability of how the team works together when facing challenges. The education student nurses receive should arm these new nursing graduates to be well prepared to deal with the mental and emotional stress. Proper training with how to deal with this would go a long way to helping prevent the high turnover rate of new nurses. Glembocki (2010) also points out that in addition to helping new nurses adjust this also helps lower costs in the healthcare facility.
With the new graduate nursing turnover rates being over 27.1% in their first year of employment (as cited in Glembocki, 2010, para 8.) students should receive adequate preparation for these challenges to be able to best combat these high numbers. With turnover rates being above 25% they can dramatically impact the level of care that patients are receiving. With this rate it can be implied that nurses may not be providing the level of that care that is expected of them due to the high stress loads and other factors leading to the number of new nurses leaving their jobs. Families that were surveyed after they lost a loved one in a hospital had ranked “not appearing over worked” as one of the most important factors for evaluating the caring level of nurses (as cited in Glembocki, 2010, para 3.). With the nurse retention rates what they are, this can impact the way nurses and the care they are providing are perceived by patients and their families.
In contemporary work environments it is a key component that employees are able to work together effectively and efficiently. This is even more important in a healthcare setting where providing excellent level of care is the utmost importance.
