Teachers in most schools today are expected to focus on fostering academic competence, and overlook the spiritual life of their students. Unless we teach in a private school that incorporates religion into the curriculum, it would be a challenge to include spirituality into the subject matter without violating the separation of church and state in the 1st Amendment of the United States Constitution.
The leadership of the educator is pivotal because ultimately “We teach who we are.” I believe those of us who are comfortable with our own spirituality will be able to integrate our faith in our pedagogy and be in a better position to make a lasting impact on the lives of our students. One of the main roles of a constructivist teacher is to encourage that process. The teacher makes sure she understands the students' existing thoughts, and guides the activities to address them and then build on them. Constructivism also taps into and triggers the students’ innate curiosity about the world and how things work.
I believe a Christian educator is vital in today’s society to nurture students into having the kinds of relationships that enhance humanity. Possibilities for the future are endless and life has no limits when students learn from positive Christian role models in the classroom. A good education and right believing are the keys that unlock the doors to dreams and visions, once students embrace the relevance of learning to follow Christ’s examples. I believe the essential pedagogy of the teacher is to help students develop their potential by believing they are capable individuals empowered with wisdom to fulfill the destiny that God purposed for their life.
In my opinion, teaching is the most rewarding vocation on earth and has the potential to contribute the greatest influence to the work culture and the U. S. culture at large. Research shows that regardless of religion or culture, all existence of humans acknowledges the Golden Rule as a standard for interacting in society. “Treating others as you would want them to treat you” is a priceless principle that I will treasure perpetually, on my journey through life. I love the simplicity of the Golden Rule; it helps to me to understand what I should do, even when I do not know what to do. I plan to integrate the following beliefs and practices into the daily routines of my classroom management strategies. I was taught that this simple rule could carry me a long way, and would make life much easier if I made it my foundation for interacting with people. Treating others as I would want to be treated in their place has guided me to a place of peace.
Jesus walked the earth teaching amazing principles on how to obtain and maintain healthy relationships. In my opinion, the “Golden Rule” is the greatest teaching that Jesus taught. This is the code of conduct for us to follow if we desire peace. Teaching students that living a “Golden Rule” lifestyle will influence their family life, relationships with peers, neighbors, and even their enemies will eliminate many behaviors that interrupt the learning process in schools today. I was never told that all days would be good, or that all people are nice; only to be nice and in doing so, my life would be better.
