First off, the life span of the average person has been extended due to advances in medical technology. In the past having any kind of sickness could result in death, the average western life expectancy in the year 1900 was 49 years, while the figure today is slightly over 75 years (University of Cork). This can mostly be credited to technological advancements which have allowed more profound research, ultimately leading to new discoveries.
