Nursing Shortage and Nurse Turn-Over
Nursing is very important and dedicated profession and the need of this profession is very much increased in the society. But unfortunately there is a shortage of nurses as compared to the required need of the society and shortage has become a serious problem now. Leadership and management is the most essential skill for the profession of nursing. The development of the future of the nurses in leadership is one of the most difficult challenges which are faced by the profession of nursing.
As the profession of nursing is still in its establishing phase so mostly people avoid in coming in this field and those who are in this feels that this profession is not payable as it should be, that’s why the turnover rate of the nurses is recorded on high level. This shortage is almost present in all over the world and it has been predicted that if these crisis exists in the profession of nursing by the year 2020 then the 65% of nursing responsibilities towards their patients will be neglected (Yukl, & Heaton, 2002). This shortage will create a huge disastrous effect over the mass causality and care of the nations.
Approaches by nurses for leadership and management
Nursing leaders and managers has got the biggest responsibilities over their shoulders to recruit and hire the nursing staff and nurses who understand this job completely and are able to overcome the current circumstances faced by the nursing profession (Yukl, & Heaton, 2002). The main reason is to determine that what factors are creating an effect over the turnover rate and shortage of the nursing profession and what is the main reason of nurses who are choosing to leave this profession. In all these circumstances the role of leadership and management in nursing plays a vital role in recruiting and guiding nurses to be a part of this field.
Factors effecting nursing shortage and turnover
There are many factors that are influencing the profession of nursing, the factors includes bad working condition, shortage of critical nursing staff, and lessen funding from the government to educate the nursing staff or fresh nurses, as it is a greater choice for women to go in nursing profession but the lack of resources are making them uncomfortable in these uncertain environment (Hill, & Jones, 2008). Except from these factors there are also many other factors that are influencing the profession of nursing negatively and that’s why the turnover rate has been increased to a damaging point.
Reason of shortage of nursing
Many reasons are there that are affecting the nursing shortage which includes the following:
• Aging nursing forces
• Less interest of students towards the nursing
• Growth in population needs growth in taking care of people more effectively and provides health care services
