Autonomous vehicles (AV) have intelligence set features which occur if an accident is unavoidable. If an AV were to be constructed one component that is necessary would be the sensing system. This system is required for the car to pick up objects that may appear in the road or street ahead. Using sound waves to pick up objects, the car would be able to identify potential problems that may appear on the road. A Global Positioning System in automatic vehicles could help locate the surroundings of an area. Traffic is one problem that may cause accidents, so with a GPS system problems such as traffic can be detected and possible prepared for in advance. An HD digital map system works almost the same way as ultrasonic sensors. Using lasers a three dimensional map of the area is constructed with detail and location of objects (curbs, traffic lights, etc..). Three types of regularities can also be added to an AV. A rationalistic moral system can be used to reduce the damage of injuries. A machine learning program can have lots of data and algorithms in order to determine the best route. The last idea could implement a Hybrid system. This system would implement natural language that would eventually correct itself overtime (artificial intelligence).
In construction of an AV the ethical theories I would end up encoding into the software would be utilitarianism, Kantianism and respect for persons. Utilitarianism focuses on a more pleasurable scenario. Since the main principle of utilitarianism is utility, the solution that produces the best outcome becomes favored. In an AV Utilitarianism could be used to ensure the least uneventful accident. If a case study scenario was presented of choosing between veering off a rail, colliding with a bus full of students or colliding with a 78 year old senior citizen, the...
