EFFICACY OF TRAINING IN CRICKET
Cricket is a power-endurance sport played for many hours at a stretch, often on consecutive days in the longer version. Many matches are won in the last minutes of the game by the fitter side. It is all very well to refine skills, but a player will not perform to his true potential unless fit.
Gone are the days when it was presumed that playing lot of cricket renders players more powerful or less prone to injury. Research has proven that to get best out of cricketers’ abilities they ought to maintain a progressive training plan.

For instance, one can do something else to avoid cricket every now and then. This ‘something else’ could be playing another sport competitively, training in the gym or just playing soccer with your team mates, because any other stop-start type sport has a crossover effect to cricket. If one can chase a football while running faster there is no reason why one can’t chase a cricket ball being a fielder. Similarly, doing weights in the gym will strengthen an individual, giving more power and speed and gets one’s muscles working in different ways well. Mere specializing in cricket to the exclusion of everything else could prove counter-productive.
Once some general training has been initiated, it is time to focus on a specific goal for a set number of weeks which is advantageous for the long season as it allows a player to develop athletic skills. Dividing the playing season into smaller periods and shifting focus to general training on one element like strength or endurance is helpful.
In the off season, like harsh winters, most players do not have facilities to develop their strength to a great degree. Therefore one can divide this period and focus on enhancing strength. One can hit the gym in December and March 2-3 times a week following a progressive overload plan. To make sure one doesn't lose other fitness elements it is important to ensure skill drills at a higher intensity and also have a longer warm-up before cricket practice or actual play. By March end a player would be stronger without losing any skill and all set for the rest of the season.
