The duties expected of an Electrical Lineman are that perform work with the operation, modification/maintenance, surveillance and protection of the electrical distribution system, and traffic control equipment. This includes substations, transformers, protection devices, distribution infrastructure, and switches and relays.
Electrical linesman must be fully qualified with an electricians license and a certificate in distribution or transmission. The requirements to obtain an electricians licence are as follows:
• The individual must pass the (LEA) Licensed Electricians Assessment.
• Completed a four year apprenticeship consisting of at least 12months experience doing electrical installation work with written proof from an employer.
• Have a cert III in Electro-Technology
A certificate in electro-technology, distribution and also transmission can be obtained through study at TAFE.
Linesman will work with both dead and live wires, when working on these wires the correct PPE (personal Protective Equipment) must be worn to ensure safety against accidental touches or intentional touches. Working on high voltage wires is a situation where a linesman might actually need to be Physically on the wire(s). In this case a special suit called a Faraday suit is worn, this is a flame retardant material strung with stainless steel thread. This means the worker has the ability to bring themselves to the same voltage potential as the wire they are working on and can safely attach themselves without getting electrocuted, much like a bird on a wire.
The man in this picture is an example of the correct PPE to wear.
These PPE will consist of goggles to protect the eyes, a hard hat to protect the head from various dangers and a high-vis shirt so that they can be easily spotted. Rubber gloves that extend up to the elbow or even up to the shoulder are used to insulate against electrical shock and accidental touches of any sort. As this man is working up in a high place a safety harness is used, this ensures that firstly the man does not...
