Elite Engineering Unable to Achieve Change
Elite Engineering has been unable to successfully implement change because they haven’t been able to get the employees to see the need for the change and to believe in the change. “It must be considered that there is nothing more difficult to carry out, nor more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to handle, than to initiate a new order of things.” (Kotter & Schlesinger, 2008) Change is often met with resistance. When it comes down to it many people fear change. At Elite Engineering, the engineers were happy with the way things were being run. “When individuals perceive that the personal goals of other team members are congruent with their own, they may believe that the team will support or facilitate attainment of valued outcomes.” (Kristof-Brown & Stevens, 2001) At Elite Engineering, Paul Johnson the CEO believed that collaboration would be key to growth and diversification of the company. Paul hoped that the engineers could work together in order to share project experiences and develop better solutions. On the other hand, the engineers saw this as a waste of their time. Their goal was to meet the requirements necessary to obtain the bonus at the end of the year, whereas the goal of the organization was to remain successful by diversifying and collaborating in order to expand their industrial consulting. “Diversity of organizational expertise and resources is perceived to be essential to gaining truly synergistic advantage from collaborating, but this in turn, implies diversity of organizations’ goals.” (Vangen & Huxham, 2012) To the more successful engineers, it was difficult to imagine changing because the way the business was operating was successful. They also didn’t believe that the litigation aspect of the business was going to begin to shrink.
Management was faced with turning critical thinkers into people who saw the value in building the relationships necessary to keep the business competitive. Another task to tackle would be getting the engineers to see that in order for the business to change, they would need to change. In any organization, they employees are the organization. A leader can attempt to implement change but will see failure if they are unable to get the employees to believe it is necessary for the success of the organization.
