Big green vs. Big oil
Recently, there has been growing concern for the damage to the environment caused by fossil fuel
usages. Climate change is one of the main concerns associated with the oil industry. Some climate
change causes are natural, including oceanic changes, volcanic activity, orbital changes, as well as
changes in the sun’s temperature. (Dunbar, paragraph 9) However, many scientists believe that the
recent warming has not been caused by nature alone. The majority attribute the the current warming
to the release of gases from burning oil, coal, as well as gas. (Dunbar, paragraph 10) These
carbon-based fuels produce the bulk of the energy used throughout the world. By burning fossil
fuels gases, such as carbon dioxide, are released into the atmosphere. (Dunbar, paragraph 10) The
gases released trap heat and cause warming of the earth. When the earth warms glaciers melt and
drought occurs. As a one of the consequences of drought, world food supply will be impacted.
(Parry, et.al., paragraph 1) The oil industry is largely blamed for the increase in carbon emissions.
The goal of many environmental groups such as The Natural Resources Defense Council, the
NRDC, is to find cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
In recent years, many oil companies, such as Shell, have been taking steps to decrease their
emissions. Although they have began to take steps in the direction of lowering their carbon output,
the oil companies recognize that their is still a need and therefore a market for fossil fuels.
According to their website, Shell has been interested in making advancements on the use of other
energy creating methods. (Shell, paragraph 3) They realized that the long term success of the
company is dependant on their ability to predict fuels and energy types that future generations will
need. (Shell, paragraph 4) They offer natural gas as an alternative to electricity and also have stake
in a wind business. (Shell, 2018) Natural gas is the cleanest burning carbon fuel. (Shell, paragraph
5) Shell has also become a heavy invested in biofuel low in carbon. (Shell, paragraph 5) By using
the biofuel they have been able to lower the amount of carbon dioxide byproduct produced
substantially. (Shell, paragraph 5) Another investment that they have made to help with the
environment was to explore the possibility of combining solar and wind power with that of gas.
(Shell, paragraph 5) Currently, the most efficient form of energy is that of fossil fuels. Steps have
been made by Shell to find more sustainable sources, however, their primary product is that of fuel.
