in this i will, be talking about the three topics that were assigned for this paper. one of them is to research on coal. one of the most famous fossil fuels, and one of the most used in this world. another, i will be talking about solar energy and for my last topic, i will be typing about how to conserve, and or recycle resources.
so first the coal. coal is the altered remains of far back plants in the prehistoric times that was originally formed in swamps and peat bogs. (World coal association , 2013) coal is a rock that can be ignited with fire and burned to make up heat and energy, and it can be the color of black or brown. (Illinois Coal Association, 2013) coal is a fossil fuel that is made from the remains of plants from millions of years ago in swamps and forests. (Coal, 2013) Coal is formed from decomposed organic material that have been heated or pressured for over a million of years.(Clean Energy, 2013)
coal is mined many different ways. coal can be surface mined, which also known as also known as opencast or opencut mining, is what they use when the coal is near the surface. then there is room and pillar mining, which is when coal deposits are mined by cutting a bunch of rooms into the coal seam and making pillars' of coal to hold up the roof of the mine. there is also long wall mining which is when they extract coal from a section (which is when they take the coal out) of the seam, or 'face' using mechanical shearers. (World coal association , 2013) Coal is mined by using giant machines and vehicles to extract the coal from the ground. (Tribal energy and Environmental Information, 2013)
Coals cost varies, depending on how much of the coal you are buying, and where it is you are buying it. one ton of coal delivery price is $44.47. The average spot price is $52.07. (New Century Coal, 2013) since there is also different types of coal, the price also depends on that. Lignite coal costs $18.77 per ton. Anthracite is $75.70 per ton. Most generally, surface mined coal is usually cheaper than underground mining.(U.S. EIA, 2013)
Coal is used for many things, but it depends on what type of coal you have and what you use it for. steam coal and thermal coal which are mainly the same thing, are used for power generation such as powering steam trains and electricity. Then there is coking coal which is mainly used for steel production. coking coal is also known as metallurgical coal. (World coal association , 2013) Another reason that coal is used is because it is one of the cheapest sources of energy. It makes a stable source of energy too.(Kentucky Coal Education, 2013)
Coal is formed through a VERY long process through millions of years. most of our coal was made 300 million years ago. it was formed by all the swampy and forest plants that were buried under earths surface. The sunlight that was stored in the plant is kept within the plan. Then after a while, it turns into peat. when the peats water is squeezed out of it, it turns into coal.(KET,...
